AC Won’t Turn On

AC Won’t Turn On

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare: to be left in the dead heat of summer with no air conditioning and no clue how to fix it.

Don’t panic! While the situation may seem dire, there are a few simple fixes to try that may solve your problem right away. Here are some troubleshooting tips that could get your air conditioner running again in no time.

How to Troubleshoot An AC That Won’t Turn On

While your first instinct may be to call a professional for help, there are a few things you should always check first. The last thing any homeowner wants is to call in a technician, only to learn their system was simply switched off!

This list may sound simple, but trust us! Doing all these things may save you time and money:

Step 1. Check your thermostat settings.

It may seem silly, but make sure your air conditioner is actually turned on. If your thermostat is blank, try replacing the batteries. While it’s probably not the case, it would be frustrating to find out the solution was so simple after you already called for help.

Step 2. Lower the temperature.

Set the temperature to lower than the current indoor temperature. Your air conditioner only switches on when it needs to. So if it’s already the right temperature indoors, it may just not need to turn on.

Step 3. Check your circuit breaker.

The fuse for your air conditioning may have tripped. Check and see if your AC fuse is in the “off” position. All you may have to do is simply reset the fuse. However, some units have built-in safety mechanisms that do not allow them to restart right at once. If your AC doesn’t start up immediately, give it a little bit of time.

Step 4. Check your condenser unit.

Make sure your condenser unit’s outdoor power switch is in the “on” position.

If you’ve covered all the basics, and your air conditioner still won’t turn on, it may be time to call a professional.
