How to Fix a Urinal That Won’t Stop Running

Urinal problems are something no one wants to deal with. But if you own a business, restaurant, or other space that has a urinal, you know brushing issues to the side can result in costly repairs later.

Fortunately, if your urinal won’t stop running, troubleshooting and repairing the problem may be easier than you think.

How to Fix a Urinal That Won’t Stop Running in 6 Steps

Urinals can experience a handful of problems, but most stem from an underlying issue with the plumbing or a part that needs to be replaced. One of the most common problems you can encounter is a urinal that won’t stop running. Read on to learn how you can fix this in just 6 simple steps.

Wrench
Flat-head Screwdriver
Replacement urinal diaphragm

Step 1. Locate Secondary Water Shut Off

Located under the first joint from the toilet wall or tile is the secondary water shut off. The secondary water shut off is typically covered by a chrome cap, but this can easily be removed with a wrench.

Step 2. Stop the Flow of Water

Using a flat-head screwdriver, turn the water supply to the urinal off. To do this, simply turn the water shut off screw counter-clockwise.

Step 3. Loosen the Flush Head Screw

On your urinal is a six or eight-sided bolt, which will likely be located at the top of the flush head. Locate this bolt and turn it slightly to loosen it.

Step 4. Remove the Flush Head Cap

Loosen the screw to the fullest in order to remove the flush head cap. As you turn the screw and it loosens, any water remaining in the flush head will pour out. This can be alarming but is completely normal.

Step 5. Locate the Diaphragm

The diaphragm is a large, black disc located inside the flush head. Remove the original urinal diaphragm and replace it with a new one. After the diaphragm is replaced, put the flush head back on.

Step 6. Turn On the Water

Bring the water supply back to the urinal by turning the secondary shut off back or to your right. Make sure you do this slowly so there isn’t an overwhelming influx of water.
